This presentation will discuss how AltaML collaborated with a Kraft Pulp Mill in North America to apply artificial intelligence/machine learning solutions to solve two complex industrial process control problems and how this can applied to broader use cases in the energy industry.
Kappa Prediction: controlling the digester process based on the kappa value is difficult and operators often wait several hours to see the effects of the changes made to the set points, resulting either in yield loss or higher chemical usage. By implementing an AI solution, the kappa value can now be predicted, and recommendations made for set point changes to bring kappa to the ideal operating value.
Chlorine Di-oxide Prediction: measuring raw material concentration in a Clo2 generator is challenging due to the lack of effective methods to measure real-time concentration, often taking many hours to control the flow of the raw material. By correlating the lab test and training data, an AI solution was developed that predicts the concentration of the raw material in between lab tests for finer controls.
